Frequently asked questions

What is GDS connectivity and why does my hotel need it?

A Global Distribution System (GDS) is a centralised booking network used by travelagents, corporate travel managers, and Travel Management Companies (TMCs) tosearch and book hotel rooms, flights, and other travel services. Business travellers andcorporate bookers rarely use OTAs like Booking.com — they book through GDSplatforms such as Amadeus, Sabre, or Travelport directly within corporate booking toolslike Concur, CWT, and Egencia. Connecting to the GDS through Hotel-Spider gives yourproperty visibility to this high-value audience you would otherwise not reach at all.

Hotel-Spider connects your property to all major GDS platforms: Amadeus, Sabre,Travelport (which includes Galileo, Worldspan, and Apollo). Together these threenetworks cover the vast majority of global travel agent and corporate booking activityacross North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and beyond. Rather than requiring you tocontract with each GDS individually — which would be prohibitively expensive for mostindependent hotels — Hotel-Spider provides access to all of them through a single setupfrom within the Hotel-Spider extranet.

GDS connectivity is primarily valuable for hotels that attract or want to attract businesstravellers, corporate groups, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions)guests, and international leisure travellers booking through traditional travel agencies.Over 80% of GDS users are booking for corporate travellers, who typically spendsignificantly more per stay and have lower cancellation rates than leisure OTA bookings. It was historically seen as relevant only for city-centre or airport hotels, but GDS activityin the leisure segment has grown substantially, making it increasingly relevant for alpineresorts, boutique hotels, and destination properties too.

Yes. Your GDS rates, availability, and restrictions are all managed centrally through theHotel-Spider extranet, alongside your OTA and direct booking channels. Any update youmake — a price change, a closed-out date, a minimum stay restriction — is automaticallyand simultaneously reflected across all connected GDS platforms with no separatelogins or manual updates required per system. This single-point management is theprimary operational advantage of using Hotel-Spider for GDS distribution rather thancontracting with each GDS separately.

Hotel-Spider supports both public rates and negotiated rates on the GDS. Public rates —such as Best Available Rate (BAR), corporate (COR), and government (GOV) rates —are visible and bookable by all travel agents and are subject to standard travel agentcommissions. Negotiated rates are private rates available only to specific companies orconsortia with which you have a direct agreement, accessed via a Rate Access Code.Negotiated rates are typically commission-free and are used to secure long-termcorporate contracts. Hotel-Spider allows you to manage all of these rate types centrallyfrom one system.

GDS is an add-on distribution layer within the Hotel-Spider platform, sitting alongside thechannel manager rather than replacing it. Your channel manager handles OTAdistribution (Booking.com, Expedia, Airbnb, etc.), while the GDS module extends yourreach to the travel agent and corporate booking network. Both are managed from thesame Hotel-Spider extranet, share the same central inventory pool, and synchronise withyour PMS. A reservation made through the GDS flows back into Hotel-Spider and theninto your PMS exactly the same way an OTA booking does.

To appear effectively on GDS platforms, your property profile needs to include rate plansand availability, room types (names, bed types, features such as balcony or kitchen),cancellation and no-show policies, check-in and check-out times, location data and GDSchain codes, and ideally photos and a property description. Hotel-Spider and its GDSconnectivity partner (Reconline) assist you in setting up and verifying this content duringonboarding to ensure your listing is accurate, complete, and optimised before going live.

No — commission handling is automated. Hotel-Spider's GDS connectivity is powered inpartnership with Reconline, which processes travel agent commissions automatically onyour behalf through Onyx CenterSource, an industry-standard commission settlementplatform. Once you pay the monthly invoice from Reconline (covering the service fee,GDS transaction fee, and any commissions from completed stays), the commissions aredistributed to the relevant travel agents promptly without any manual work from yourteam. The standard recommended commission rate is approximately 10%.

Hotel-Spider's GDS connectivity is performance-based with no setup fees and nomonthly minimums charged by Reconline. You pay a service fee and a GDS transactionfee only for actualised bookings — stays that have been completed — along with theapplicable travel agent commission. Guests pay their stay directly at your hotel; you areinvoiced monthly for all fees from the previous month's completed stays. This pay-per-performance model means there is no upfront financial risk to getting started on theGDS.

GDS connectivity delivers the most value for hotels with a meaningful average daily rate(ADR), since Reconline applies minimum ADR thresholds and location-specific eligibilityrequirements. Very low ADR properties, budget hostels, or properties in locations withminimal corporate or international leisure travel demand may find the GDS generatesinsufficient booking volume to justify the effort of setup and ongoing contentmanagement. Hotel-Spider recommends checking eligibility with Reconline directlybefore proceeding, to ensure GDS is a commercially sound channel for your specificproperty.
